In 1979, when about 50 Swedish students traveled to the USA on a student exchange program, EF High School Year was created. Since then, the program has become an important part of the growing EF Education family.
The early years
After that first year in 1979, EF High School Year became very popular. More and more students traveled every year, and a rapidly growing number of host families welcomed exchange students into their homes, communities and schools. Now, as then, the program offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience for exchange students, giving them the opportunity to learn new languages, understand different cultures, travel to new places and, in doing so, become independent, open-minded adults.

The program grows
EF's mission is to break down the barriers of language, culture and geography that divide us. As the popularity of EF High School Year grew, so did the number of countries participating in the program. Today, EF exchange students from over 25 different countries can go on a student exchange to the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Japan and Hong Kong.
Breaking down barriers
The program would not be possible without our fantastic host families, who welcome students into their homes every year. Every student, host family, local representative and staff member plays an important part in making EF High School Year an amazing experience for everyone involved. Together, we’re bringing the world closer together and breaking down the barriers of language, culture and geography, one student at a time.
